I was living in Australia. Heavenly Father wanted me and my family to move there. My wife is Australian, so when we first moved there I stayed at my father-in-law’s house. I had a terrible time trying to find a job. My wife was pregnant, I couldn’t find work, it was a really humbling experience. I became best friends with a Mauri brother in the ward. He was extremely spiritually gifted. One day as we were talking about spiritual things the spirit was really strong and he suggested we should take advantage of the spirit and pray. After our prayer he said to me “the spirit says you’re going to have a spiritual experience in the next few days.”

I wanted a spiritual experience, so I prayed and fasted the next day, Sunday. I broke my fast because we were invited to eat at someone’s house that night.  On Monday I decided to do as Enos and Nephi and fast and pray all day. I went out into a bungalow and prayed vocally for as long as I could. When I couldn’t think of things to pray about I read my scriptures. I prayed until the afternoon, but nothing happened. I was really discouraged. That night I went to my Mauri friend’s house to talk about things. He gave me a blessing.

The next day was Tuesday. I was unemployed at the time, so I decided to give it another go. I broke my fast and went out to the bungalow to pray again. I prayed for about an hour and this happened:

From my journal:

I knelt down and was praying to the Lord with all   my heart that I might receive evidence that what I was doing was right.    I could feel the spirit in my chest and my face was tingling.  While   feeling this I pleaded that I might have greater evidence.  All of a   sudden I felt power come into my body.  As Nephi said it consumed my   flesh.  So much so that I felt that my hands were out stretched and my   chest was pulled up and power surged through me like I have never felt in all   my life.  It was so powerful that I could hardly control myself.  I   felt like I was being shocked with energy.  I knew it was the energy of   God.  I felt His power!

At the time I wasn’t sure what had happened, but it wasn’t long after that Heavenly Father began to help me understand that I had experienced the baptism of fire. Here are a few things that I learned.

1. The baptism of fire is indeed a baptism or immersion in the spirit. For me it was a powerful experience, but it may come in a serene, peaceful way. Both Adam and Jesus received the baptism of fire immediately after baptism

Moses 6

64 And it came to pass, when the Lord had spoken with Adam, our father, that Adam cried unto the Lord, and he was caught away by the Spirit of the Lord, and was carried down into the water, and was laid under the water, and was brought forth out of the water.

65 And thus he was baptized, and the Spirit of God descended upon him, and thus he was born of the Spirit, and became quickened in the inner man.

Mark 1

9 And it came to pass in those days, that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized of John in Jordan.

10 And straightway coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon him:

2. The baptism of fire does make a change to the body

Mosiah 27

25 And the Lord said unto me: Marvel not that all mankind, yea, men and women, all nations, kindreds, tongues and people, must be born again; yea, born of God, changed from their carnal and fallen state, to a state of righteousness, being redeemed of God, becoming his sons and daughters;

26 And thus they become new creatures; and unless they do this, they can in nowise inherit the kingdom of God.

3. The baptism of fire is instigated and performed by Jesus

3 Nephi 9:20

And ye shall offer for a sacrifice unto me a broken heart and a contrite spirit. And whoso cometh unto me with a broken heart and a contrite spirit, him will I baptize with fire and with the Holy Ghost…

4. The baptism of fire changes your disposition

Mosiah 5:2

2 And they all cried with one voice, saying: Yea, we believe all the words which thou hast spoken unto us; and also, we know of their surety and truth, because of the Spirit of the Lord Omnipotent, which has wrought a mighty change in us, or in our hearts, that we have no more disposition to do evil, but to do good continually.

5. The baptism of fire can happen right after baptism, or it may take years. When we are confirmed members of the church we are asked to “receive the Holy Ghost.”  This is an invitation to us. I didn’t experience it until I was 33. Notice that Alma is asking members of the church if they have experienced it.

Alma 5
14 And now behold, I ask of you, my brethren of the church, have ye spiritually been born of God? Have ye received his image in your countenances? Have ye experienced this mighty change in your hearts?

6. The earth follows the same pattern of being saved through the ordinances of the gospel. The earth was baptized by water during the times of Noah and will be baptized by fire upon Jesus return to usher in the millenium.

7. There is a difference between the gift the Holy Ghost and the baptism of fire. The gift of the Holy Ghost is the right to the constant companionship of the Holy Ghost based on righteousness. The baptism of fire is the actual reception of the Holy Ghost. 3 Nephi 19 is a great example of how the baptism of fire is receiving the Holy Ghost.

3 Nephi 19

9 And they did pray for that which they most desired; and they desired that the Holy Ghost should be given unto them.

10 And when they had thus prayed they went down unto the water’s edge, and the multitude followed them.

11 And it came to pass that Nephi went down into the water and was baptized.

12 And he came up out of the water and began to baptize. And he baptized all those whom Jesus had chosen.

13 And it came to pass when they were all baptized and had come up out of the water, the Holy Ghost did fall upon them, and they were filled with the Holy Ghost and with fire.

14 And behold, they were encircled about as if it were by fire; and it came down from heaven, and the multitude did witness it, and did bear record; and angels did come down out of heaven and did minister unto them.

15 And it came to pass that while the angels were ministering unto the disciples, behold, Jesus came and stood in the midst and ministered unto them.

16 And it came to pass that he spake unto the multitude, and commanded them that they should kneel down again upon the earth, and also that his disciples should kneel down upon the earth.

17 And it came to pass that when they had all knelt down upon the earth, he commanded his disciples that they should pray.

18 And behold, they began to pray; and they did pray unto Jesus, calling him their Lord and their God.

19 And it came to pass that Jesus departed out of the midst of them, and went a little way off from them and bowed himself to the earth, and he said:

20 Father, I thank thee that thou hast given the Holy Ghost unto these whom I have chosen; and it is because of their belief in me that I have chosen them out of the world.

  • After decades as a member of the church, I finally received the baptism of fire in February of 2007. It did indeed transform me into a person who desires to “do good continually.”

I had read many of the scriptures above and wondered what this baptism of fire is and why I had not experienced it, but had been taught that it is a gradual experience of the spirit, something that comes upon us like the “still, small voice.” It is nothing of the kind. When you receive the baptism of the spirit, you know it.

I’ve come to believe that this teaching that the baptism of fire is barely noticeable has crept into the church only because so few actually experience it, even after a lifetime of membership. This is further evidence to me how far we have come from the early 19th century LDS church, when gifts of the spirit were common and plentiful. That we have to rationalize it away as something that does not occur the way the scriptures tell us it should is unfortunate indeed. One reason, I believe, that we do not receive the baptism of fire is that we don’t bother to seek it.

  • Jack:

Why tempt God? Those who have the companionship of the Holy Ghost are justified — and will surely be sanctified if they continue faithfully. Such seems to be the common order of the day — especially among those who have been raised in the church. Instead of criticizing the membership for not seeking that one single powerful experience we ought to laud their ability to continue faithful by following the more subtle workings of the spirit. That is faith indeed.

    • How is it tempting God, Jack, to follow the admonition of Christ? Except one be born of the water AND the spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God (James 3:5).

Because we have come to look to “the common order of the day” when such spiritual manifestations are rarely evident, we as a church have tended to rationalize them away. I believe baptism of the spirit is of great importance. It was to me, anyway.

  • James:

Thank you for adding your witness. The baptism of fire is indeed an event, the scriptures make that abundantly clear. Those that I know have experienced it have had very similar experiences, and in ever case it was a significant event.

  • JLC:

I received the baptism of fire and was born again the summer of 2009. I too have been a member all my life but that one event changed me from a carnal and fallen person to a new creature. And since that day I have done nothing but hunger and thirst after righteousness. I no longer had (at that moment) a desire to yell at people in my car, watch TV, take a look at a little porn, Idolize my favorite sports team or sports hero, worship the “Brothern”, lust after money, desire a High and holy calling or popularity,

I did find myself, at that moment, reading and studying scriptures much, much more, loving my wife more, which includes a better sex and romantic relationship. Forgiving all people, praying more fervently, relaxing better, receiving miracle after miracle. work less(the typical Babylonian week is not of God. It gives us little time to be still.), allow others their own opinion. I could go on.

I believe if you think it is not an event and a long drawn out process you are missing out of one of the greatest blessings that God can bestow on a person. It is not temping God to ask for this blessing in my opinion.

My experience of receiving the Baptism of Fire and the Holy Ghost occurred some 4 yrs after I was baptized, at 22 yrs old. I was praying to know if the Book of Mormon is true when i experienced a gentle hand placed upon my back and felt fire spreading from that point throughout my entire body. I was literally electrocuted with joy, love, and profound happiness. The experience lasted for approx. 5 minutes and gradually subsided leaving an enormous energy in me that caused me to walk briskly to and fro, back and forth in the room where I was for the next 5-10 minutes as I marveled at what had happened. An assurance was burned into me that the Book of Mormon is true, that Joseph Smith was/is a true prophet, that he did receive the gold plates exactly as he testified, that Jesus Christ lives, and that Heavenly Father lives. It was an incredibly powerful experience, nothing like it ever before or since, altho I have had other powerful spiritual experiences since. Indeed, it changed my life! While I still do sin, I have no desire to sin but only do so out of weakness and folly. My heart’s desire is to live completely pure and to be worthy to be with my Savior and experience that love and joy again.

  • James:

This is awesome hearing your experiences. Thank you so much for sharing.

  • James:

Here’s another thing regarding the baptism of fire to add to the above list. The baptism of fire, for a gentile, will purge out the old blood and make them an actual seed of Abraham.

This first Comforter or Holy Ghost has no other effect than pure intelligence. It is more powerful in expanding the mind, enlightening the understanding, and storing the intellect with present knowledge, of a man who is of the literal seed of Abraham, than one that is a Gentile though it may not have half as much visual effect upon his body; for as the Holy Ghost falls upon one of the literal seed of Abraham, it is calm and serene; and his whole soul and body are only exercised by the pure spirit of intelligence; while the effect of the Holy Ghost upon a Gentile, is to purge out the old blood, and make him actually of the seed of Abraham. That man that has none of the blood of Abraham (naturally) must have a new creation by the Holy Ghost.

Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p.149

    • Chris Brewer:

I’ve wondered about this statement. It is still not clear to me what it is saying. I guess I am curious to know if what I have experienced is the serene or the blood purging. Parts ofmy baptism by fire were quite turbulent and distressing but afterward resolved into the mind-expanding experience described here. How would they be different? I feel I relate to the state of a gentile and my blood line would be european which I associate with the Gentile group. What are we supposed to make of this quote really?

I am born again from above therefore am a child of God The Father.

    • Ranie Branson:

I was baptised by fire 8 years ago! A complete stranger told me everything about my life and my deepest and darkest secrets… I mean everything. I recieved what he called the baptism of fire that night. I still have many questions that i have about this. I am certainly under playing what all happened that night, as writing the whole story of that glorious night would be endless pages. I am looking for help in disernment, and also wanting to tell any who would like to hear my testimony. If any, please contact me at Thank You, and somebody with more knowledge than me about this, please contact me! God Bless!!!

  • Jack:

    Rock Waterman,

I’m not saying that one *shouldn’t* be born of the spirit. Of course we must be born of water and fire. I’m only saying that such an experience may be more of a process for some than for others. There are many in the church who have no disposition to do evil who cannot pinpoint the exact moment they became that way. For many — if not most — it is experienced incrementally. Indeed it may not even occur to some that they’ve experienced it until they’ve developed a little spiritual hindsight. And so when I say that we shouldn’t tempt God I’m implying that we need not seek a gift that we’ve already received.

    • Spektator:

I would suggest you review the experience of Alma and the recitation of his experience in Mosiah and Alma. In Alma, chapter 36, he states that “because of the word which he [God] has imparted unto me, behold, many have been born of God, and have tasted as I have tasted, and have seen eye to eye as I have seen; therefore, they do know of the things of which I have spoken…” Alma tells us that many have experienced the same event that he experienced. They have tasted the same spiritual flood that Alma did.

In Mosiah, chapter 27, Alma is quoted as follows:

“For, said he, I have repented of my sins and have been redeemed of the Lord; behold, I am born of the Spirit. And the Lord said unto me: Marvel not that all mankind, yea, men and women, all nations, kindreds, tongues, and people, must be born again; yea, born of God, changed from their carnal and fallen state, to a state of righteousness, being redeemed of God, becoming his sons and daughters. And thus they become new creatures; and unless they do this, they can in nowise inherit the kingdom of God. I say unto yo, unless this be the case, they must be cast off; and this I know, because I was cast off.”

Let me ask you… Do you equate Alma’s experience with your incremental and undefined experience? Do you believe that God is no respector of persons and offers this experience to all that are willing to seek Him? Do you believe that Alma’s born again experience is not available to many today? What are you missing because you assume this second baptism is something it is not? What part of “all mankind” isn’t applicable to the same born again experience that Alma received?

    • Catherine Stevens:

Hi Jack:) Just wanted to let you know that Baptism by Fire is not a process. It is an actual singular event. I have a relationship with 4 missionaries that experienced this divine ordinance in September of 2103. Their experiences are fascinating and testimony building. Once you experience Baptism of Fire you do not question whether you have had it or not. It is profoundly clear. These missionaries were shown many things in visions and although desire to no more sin, still do simply because of the fact that they are human. You do not have to be perfect or even worthy to receive it. As long as you have been baptized by water and understand the six points to the Gospel you are eligible. Knowing about Baptism of fire and prayer and fasting and the desire to have it is all you need. Every person on this planet will have to have this ordinance to enter into the kingdom of heaven. Whether in this life or the next it has to be done. I wish the church taught this concept more freely so that more people knew about it. I myself at age 45, although had heard of it didn’t understand it fully. I am so glad that I do now. I hope to receive mine and pray diligently that I will.

  • JR:

I must agree with you. People who cite the gradually born of the Spirit idea usually mention the Lamanites who received the Baptism of Fire and the Holy Ghost AND KNEW IT NOT, supposing they must have received it gradually. I see nothing in the scriptures that suggests that the experience is ever a gradual experience. On the contrary, every time it is mentioned it is a remarkable experience. What I believe happened with those Lamanites was that they KNEW something wonderful had happened but they did not have an understanding of just what it was, thus, they KNEW IT NOT.
Thank you for this lively and valuable website.

  • James:

When I had my experience I didn’t know what had happened, only that it was very significant. So, I had the baptism of fire and I “knew it not.” It wasn’t until I prayed and asked Heavenly Father what had happened that I received an answer, then I knew what it was.

The baptism of fire is an event, just like being baptized by water. It will happen on a day just like when you were born into this world.

I think Moroni refers to the lamanites that were baptized by fire here:

    Ether 12:14
Behold, it was the faith of Nephi and Lehi that wrought the change upon the Lamanites, that they were baptized with fire and with the Holy Ghost.

We can read about that event in Helaman:

    Helaman 5
43 And it came to pass that when they cast their eyes about, and saw that the cloud of darkness was dispersed from overshadowing them, behold, they saw that they were encircled about, yea every soul, by a pillar of fire.

44 And Nephi and Lehi were in the midst of them; yea, they were encircled about; yea, they were as if in the midst of a flaming fire, yet it did harm them not, neither did it take hold upon the walls of the prison; and they were filled with that joy which is unspeakable and full of glory.

45 And behold, the Holy Spirit of God did come down from heaven, and did enter into their hearts, and they were filled as if with fire, and they could speak forth marvelous words.

  • Spektator:

In the Book of Mormon editions prior to the 1981 version that is widely used in the church, there is a footnote in 3 Nephi 9:20 pointing back to Helaman 5:45. That was removed in this latest edition. However, there is still a footnote asociated with Helaman 5:45 that points to 3 Nephi 9:20.

I take this to mean that for most of the history of the church, the people understood that there was a linkage between these two scriptures. That the meaning was that the 300 Lamanites didn’t understand what was happening to them in the midst of this life changing event.

To negate the need for us to seek this second baptism, which Alma states must be attained by all mankind, is a clear rejection of the fulness of the gospel that was restored in these latter days.

So, JR, I am in full agreement with you.

  • Jack:

I’d be careful about using the conversion stories of those who were the “vilest of sinners” as examples for all to follow. Yes we must all be born again. But there are many who have quietly been born again over time — who are filled with charity. Remember, the first fruit of the spirit is love — and it is by this love that we know they are true disciples of Christ. Not by whether or not they bear witness of a mighty change experienced in one “fell swoop.”

    • Spektator:

We are told in 3 Nephi, chapter 27 that “no unclean thing can enter into his kingdom.” We are ALL the vilest of sinners unless we are cleansed by His blood. So if we can’t use sinners as examples of being born again, who can we use? Enos tells us of his wrestle to receive a remission of his sins. Was that an imperceptable change over a lifetime? Can you point to any event described in the scriptures as being born again that was this type of non-event?

We each have to amke choices in our lives based on what we perceive to be desirable. You have chosen to believe that the examples in the scriptures are unique events and not the norm. You have decided that Enos, Alma, Nephi, the people of King Bengamin, the 300 Lamanites, Paul, Peter and the other apostles, and, finally, Cornelius are not to be used as examples of what God desires of us. What are the consequences of your decision? What will you miss by not having this experience that is necessary for the remission of your sins?

I can only tell you that the experience is real and that my reading of the scriptures encourages us to seek after this necessary ordinance. The baptism of fire and the Holy Ghost for the remission of sins is described in 2 Nephi 31:17-18 as the gate to the strait and narrow path leading to eternal life. Can one’s experience of “being quietly born again over time” considered a gate? I think not.

    • Catherine Stevens:

You are right many people are born again gradually but that is not the same thing as Baptism of Fire.

      • Log:

        66 And he heard a voice out of heaven, saying: Thou art baptized with fire, and with the Holy Ghost. This is the record of the Father, and the Son, from henceforth and forever;

67 And thou art after the order of him who was without beginning of days or end of years, from all eternity to all eternity.

68 Behold, thou art one in me, a son of God; and thus may all become my sons. Amen.

There is a really good book, “Experiencing the Mighty Change”, available free online at .
It was written in about 1993 and is out of print now but has been made available for free online. In the appendix there are a couple of really good real life experiences recorded that are very inspiring to read. The book over all has a lot of good information.

First let me apologise for the length…

I’m grateful for your testimonies of the Baptism of Fire. And would like to add my own experience. Like most of us I thought that the confirmation and Baptism of Fire (BoF) was the same thing. It wasn’t until my mission that I ran into those missionary who loved to talk about the mysteries it was the first time I had ever heard of the baptism of fire or the calling and election. I was really excited about the calling and election and made that my focus which is why I was super surprised by my baptism of fire experience. I was shooting for the calling and election and got Baptism of Fire. I now know more and like James in the first commend it everyone to gain their baptism of fire. Since my own experience I have been able to coach 4 of my seven children to obtain their own BoF experience. Its not that hard 1-2 days max. James has all the references above. Enos is a great template to follow. Keep on those knees until its done. that’s the hard part. Now I have a recently my wife confirmed that she had also received her 12 months before we met (a lot fell into place when I found that out). I have studied the baptism of fire and calling and calling and election continually for 27 years. I was 29yo when I had the BoF. Anyone who things I’m boasting is wrong yet I know with a perfect knowledge that I can trust those of you who have had this experience will not take what am saying that way. More than anyone I trust those that have received the fulness of the gospel and been born again.

My Experience: It started with me noticing a pattern in my life. I realized that there was a direct corollary between the oscillations’ (ups and downs) I was experience in my ability to reliably provide for my families and the oscillations’ in my religious behavior (premeditated sining) for most that would be a no-brainer but not for me. So I decided one day that I was sick of the up and downs and wanted to have a more stable (temperate) life. Now I had been breaking commandments all over the place and couldn’t remember where I left off so I thought “lets just knock em all out”, not sure if you can do that but I’m gonna have a go…. I read Jacobs account of his unshakable confidence and said “yep” I’ll take some of that. And straight after him I read Enos’ account and thought that looked like the HOW to Jacobs WHAT . So I decided I would experiment. I would get up early and go to my garage and offer up a prayer vocally asking for forgiveness until I knew it was given (I didn’t know how I would know) I had arranged that my wife keep the children away until I was done, outlining to her my objective. I had planned to get up at 5am but got up at 7am and retire to the garage to pray.

When I started my prayer felt like it was going up to the roof hitting and flopping to the ground, I tried using fancy words, glorying God and so forth, it was starting to feel like work. I kept going and this time I heard a voice saying taken from my journal, “Thy sins are forgiven thee I am an angel stretch forth you hand and I will lift you up “ I put my hand forward, felt nothing, opened my eyes and saw nothing but suddenly I got scared and used the temple example to cast satan out.

I got back on my knees and started again (about an hour had passed), I started praying using big words again (in vain) when another voice came to me and said “thy words are vain, speak the words of your heart!” When I looked what was in my heart I saw only the words “Father , I’m sorry” at that moment there was an explosion of Joy which filled my entire body flowing from the top of my head down until I was almost overwhelmed with joy (which is a bit odd when you think about it), a vision opened up and I could see right up into the heavens and saw angles and heard a heavenly course, I can still feel and see everything as I write this. At that moment I knew everything was true, every painful thing my parents had tried to instil in their stubborn son was true and that my sins had been completely washed away. This was the gift of the Holy Ghost and the continual companionship of the Holy Ghost was that as I continued to sin, (not wanting too but did anyway), I could repent immediately and know in that moment I was completely washed clean. This is a great gift!

Thank you again for your testimonies. In regards to the process vs. Event? Isnt it both? Doesn’t every event start with a process every process ends with an event?

    • JR:

QB: Thank you for sharing your experience. I did not mention in citing my experience of Baptism of Fire and the Holy Ghost on 6/24, that I too, as you did, determined that I would continue praying for as long as it would take to receive an answer. In fact, I prayed and recvd no answer, prayed again and recvd no answer, then I said out loud (I think I did anyway) with very serious determination “Lord, I am going to stay right here and keep on praying until you answer me” or words to that effect. The next time I prayed, the third time, I recvd my answer. I did the same thing again many years later when I determined that I had fallen far from where I should be and needed desperately to repent. I again told the Lord that I would not stop praying until I recvd an answer. The key here is that I REALLY meant it when I said those words. This time I had another experience which is too sacred to openly share.
Thank you all who have felt moved to share your experiences.
You are such a small number out of the world. Hopefully we will all be together in Zion one day soon, away from this wicked, spiritually corrosive world.
      WIth love,

    • Catherine Stevens:

I know that you had the Baptism of Fire just through your description. Right before you are cleansed Satan tries to take you low. You enter what is called the gall of bitterness. It is so you can recognize the complete opposite of the majesty that God gives you through the cleansing. I am excited for you and hope to have my experience soon.

  • Matthew:

Thank you for this discussion. It is incredibly illuminating. I am trying to find out my standing before God. I have experienced many powerful interactions with the Spirit, but I’m not sure if any of them constituted Baptism of Fire. I will seek further understanding through prayer.

  • Mrs Maninder Shah:

I would like to share my experience of baptism of holy ghost and baptism of fire.Few months after I took baptism of water, one day I prayed lord so many months are passed and i am not still baptised by holy spirit. Please tomorrow when I attend the church kindly baptise me with it.Next day when the speaker begin to preach . After some timr he said GOD is telling me to pray for the baptism of holy spirit as there are many who are not baptised with it.So the moment he begin to prat , more then 60 people in the church begin to speak in tongues unknown to the world.I said LOrd why you forgot me and the same moment my lips started shivering and I also started speaking in tongues.God filled me with his hol spirit.
two days back Lord put in my heart to pray along with my friend. So I along with my husband went to her house and we started praying with her along with her husband.Suddenly, I saw fire with my closed eyes.i started murmerring fire fire…
Suddenly i lay flat on the ground .i saw a road with 5-6 cross on it in a row. A big line of fire as wide as a huge pipe line was moving on the road from one cross to another in a high speed . though the cross were in fire but still they were not burning.then the fire reaches the very big ball of light. It looked like a sun.but it was not. Then i saw that the line of fire returned from the ball of light and submerged into my hands as if it was entering into my hands. And then holy spirit sspoke to all of us through my tongue.that this is the fire is the holy spirit who reaches God through cross and then it comes to us .THis fire clenses our sins and make us a new creation. It burns all that unwanted things in you and make you the perfect crop good for harvest.that light was no other then GOD.and the fire was HOLY SPIRIT.
